“By 2026 all Beninese people will be Democrats.” This prophecy by Boni Yayi, former president of Benin, is on the path to fulfillment. It is no longer a day in Benin that the “Democrats” party welcomes new members. This weekend, the Flame of Democracy Party registered new members, not the least in Ségbana as well as in Lalo.

In the north of Benin, in Ségbana, a locality in the Alibori department, several founding members joined the “Les Démocrates” party. The accession ceremony was held this Sunday, May 12, 2024 during a large ceremony preceded by a Muslim prayer. The new Democrats were welcomed by the second vice-president of the party, president of the Democratic parliamentary group, the honorable Nourénou Atchadé with at his side the vice-president in charge of Atacora the honorable René Bagoudou, and a strong delegation composed of members of the national coordination, deputies, municipal and constituency coordinators. “After reflection and several consultations and even the demands of the base, we decided to join the people’s party. The Democrats party is the party that best responds to the aspirations of the Beninese populations and we are here to give the best of us for its influence,” argued the spokesperson for the members.

On behalf of the president of the party Boni Yayi, the honorable Nourénou Atchadé reassured the new comrades that in the party “Les Démocrates”, there are no old or new members. " Everybody's equal. No difference between someone who joined yesterday and someone who joins today. The main thing is the ideal that unites us, restoring democracy to Benin and living together. On behalf of President Boni Yayi, I welcome you and tell you that you are at home,” he said. Taking advantage of the opportunity of this important membership, the honorable Nourénou Atchadé, representing President Boni Yayi for the occasion, insisted that those who have just lit the flame of democracy in Ségbana have not taken the wrong path. This is why he urged all other activists from the Up-R and Br parties who are still hesitant to join the ranks within the “Democrats” party.

The big catch in Lalo

It is not only in Atacora that the “Democrats” party has harvested. This same Sunday in Couffo, the party of the movement of Patrice Talon, the Republican Bloc (Br) emptied itself of its substance in favor of the political formation of the opposition led by the former head of state Boni Yayi . Indeed, a large group made up of founding members of Br, certain executive candidates in the last legislative elections as well as coordinators and municipal councilors have broken ties with the political chapel led by Bio Tchané. They signed up for the “Democrats” party last Sunday. To welcome their new companions in political struggle, a strong delegation led by the first vice-president of the opposition party, the honorable Éric Houndété traveled to Lalo. “You have just shown the way to those who still doubt. And I am sure that it will not be long before they follow in your footsteps,” said the honorable Houndété to the members.

The “Democrats” party has thus taken a big step in establishing roots in the Couffo department. The former Br activists who are now executives of Boni Yayi's party have given this assurance. According to reports, they will work to make their department a citadel of the party of the flame of democracy. To get there, the key remains, will advise the first vice-president Houndété, perseverance and work on the ground.
